Four years ago, I opened my AT&T (then Cingular) cellphone account in Alabama, and I’ve never gotten around to changing the area code from 205 (Birmingham) to an NYC area code. So when I called AT&T Customer Support to inquire about my bill, I obviously came up as an Alabama account, which may have led my call to be routed to a service rep with a noticeable Southern accent. I was calling with regards to the discount on my cell phone bill I’m supposed to get as an NYC government employee, which led the service rep to connect the dots of my migratory activity:
Service Rep: So what in the world caused you to leave Sweet Home Alabama for New York City?
Me: Oh, you know, looking for fame and fortune in the big city…
Service Rep: I believe that. I visited New York once and just fell in love with New York City!
Me: Yep, I believe it…
Sigh. Note to self: change cell phone number one of these days so people from Alabama stop wondering why I don’t have an NYC area code and people from NYC will stop wondering why I have an Alabama area code.
