Now that I’ve got one of those fancy new iPhones, I find myself using the video recording feature almost daily. Finally I’m able to capture all of those random moments that define the New York experience. Here’s the first of many: jazz and dancing in Grand Army Plaza, right outside the Brooklyn Public Library:
I took this picture today in Red Hook. There’s this great park next to the Ikea on the water that repurposes old docks as public space. That’s my bike beneath the steel behemoth:
Say what you will about Koreans and their parochialism; they sure know how to come together as a country: Korean soccer fans in Seoul, South Korea. Source: New York Times World Cup Coverage
Last week I had the pleasure of participating in the second annual “Tour de Brooklyn.” It’s not a bike race; it’s a group ride sponsored by Transportation Alternatives, a nonprofit that advocates for bike/pedestrian/transit friendly policy. And by “group ride,” I mean about 2,500 bike riders: Bikes as far as the eye can see! It [...]
May 16, 2010, was a lovely spring day in Park Slope, Brooklyn: Baseball in Prospect Park. The game as God meant it to be played: under a gorgeous blue sky, on crisp green grass, flanked by majestic leafy trees. Love it. Prospect Park Lake. I live a 15 minute walk away from this beauty. I’m [...]
Two different views of the new Brooklyn Bridge Park: The first is from the lawn, looking at the Bridge… …and the second is from the bridge itself, looking down upon the lawn: It’s a curious yet wonderful oasis of green amidst the stone, concrete, and water. It’s so rare that we get a brand new [...]
A few months ago, I noted how unusual it was that my current computer, a 2006 Macbook Pro, was already 3.5 years old. Prior to this one, I’d become so accustomed to replacing computers every other year due to obsolescence, hardware failure, some combination of both. On April 6, 2010, the Macbook Pro officially reached [...]
I was in Golden, CO, in mid-March for my niece Maren Wall’s baptism. I’m happy to report that Maren and her parents are doing great! These pictures are from Golden, CO, and nearby Boulder, CO.
This track dropped a few weeks ago on Overthinking It, but I wanted to make sure it got proper coverage on my blog as well.
Put simply, it’s the unholy love child of throw-away pop star Ke$ha and blues legend Muddy Waters:
“Mad Men” goes after the hipster demographic: From my most recent Overthinking It post analyzing a certain type of advertisement: “Bad Things Happen To You When You Use Our Product.” This picture will make sense when you read the article. Trust me.
I had the house to myself. What else was I supposed to do but bash out “Thunder Road” as loud as I could with just my voice and a piano? [youtube g9D7ZuNncDs]
I’m coming up on 5 years in New York City (moved here in February 2005), and this upcoming milestone has got me thinking about items that I’ve owned for a long time that I’m shocked, shocked, that I haven’t lost by now. I’m not a particularly forgetful person, but I have lost significant things in [...]
It’s no secret–I am a fan of the quantitative. Similar to what I did last year, I’ve compiled the past year’s achievements and memorable occasions and now present them in numerical form. Over 500,000 visitors to OverthinkingIt.com Over 25,000 job placements by NYC’s Workforce1 Career Centers Over 20,000 visits to last year’s “Hubbert Peak Theory of [...]
Potential hit single, I should add. According to uPlaya.com, a site which uses a computer algorithm to determine the likelihood a given song could be a hit, my original song “Sugar Mommy” scored an 8.5 out of 10, good enough for a “Platinum Auddy” award! A Platinum Auddy™ denotes clear mathematical hit potential. The underlying [...]
Due to a string of very fortunate events, I got a gig writing a bit of background music for a video of George Soros lectures. Aside from the very beginning and end, you can barely hear it, but trust me, it’s there!
Tuesday, November 3, was a glorious fall day here in Brooklyn. I took all but three of these pictures at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, which I discovered, is free on Tuesdays! The last three are from Prospect Park.
Happy Election Day! Good thing I have the day off so I can update this blog. Okay, I’m done gloating. Here are my latest Overthinking It contributions: Be sure to check out the latest podcast episode, in which the panel somehow digressed from Halloween to Steven Seagal movies. I have only myself to blame for [...]
I went as a “Guitar Hero Hero”: Notice the DIY touches: the “You Rock!!” title and the “rock meter” (maxed out, natch). This year’s spook-tacular agenda took me to a brief viewing of the Greenwich Village Halloween Parade: and a spectacular performance by my friend’s theater troupe, the Striking Viking Story Pirates.
In this week’s OTI Think Tank, I present “National Treasure” as my “reference movie,” a concept which we define in a couple of ways: a movie in which every good thing about it is balanced by something bad, or a movie by which you judge “good movies” versus “bad movies; i.e.,, if a movie is [...]
My mom passed away five years ago this day. Looking back, I realized I wrote at least two different versions of her obituary during her last days. An extended version is below. Myung Ja Lee, known as “Agnes” by her many friends, died October 21, 2004,, at her home in Birmingham, AL, after battling cancer. [...]
Newest Overthinking It post: what happened to the IMDB Top 250 list over the course of a year? Quite a lot, actually. Turns out the list is even more biased towards newer movies than it was before.
In this week’s Overthinking It “Think Tank,” I nominated Pizza the Hutt from Spaceballs as “Best Fictional Food.” Check out the rest of the nominees and Vote for Pizza!
In an inexplicable burst of productivity, I’m proudly announcing my totally redesigned website: GoesToTwelve.com, a one-stop place for my creative output: blogging, music, and web design. It’s powered by WordPress, a free open source content management system (CMS) that’s way more powerful than anything I was able to build on my own. The old Blogger-powered [...]
